Russia take on Spain in the second Euro 2008 semi-final tonight in Vienna.
Spain go into the match as favourites, and will field the tournament’s most potent attacking combination in David Villa and Fernando Torres. However, Russia have also have some powerful strikers in their arsenal and will be relying on the likes of Andre Arshavin to put them on the scoreboard early in the game.
Spanish coach Luis Aragones has indicated that he wants his team to crack Russia at the back, using constant pressure on the depleted Russian defence to generate scoring opportunities.
Russia, meanwhile, are riding the crest of their best ever performance at the European football championship, and will be confident in their ability to defeat Spain after knocking out a Netherlands side that had looked unbeatable during the group stages.
However history is on Spain’s side. The two teams have met four times in international football fixtures and the Spanish have won on three of these occasions. The Russians, by contrast, have managed to claim only a draw from these encounters.
Whatever the outcome of tonight’s game, fans are guaranteed a thrilling contest in what has been one of the most exciting European football championships in recent memory.
